Burning Neck Pain
The old saying “a pain in the neck” carries a real meaning for those who have suffered from burning neck pain. Burning neck pain can be caused by many different means, but the essential common element is that the muscles in the neck have been adversely affected, creating inflammation, spasms and burning neck pain which can be treated by a variety of means.
At its source, burning neck pain is usually a combination of muscle spasms and inflammation that puts pressure on the nerve endings. This results in the burning neck pain we feel, whether we have “slept the wrong way”, twisted our neck muscles too far or have been involved in whiplash-type of incident. Whatever the cause, there are several different types of treatment for burning neck pain.
Before a person engages in a home remedy or treatment for burning neck pain, it is important to understand the source of the discomfort. If this is the type of pain with no known cause and is constant, even building in severity, then it is important to seek out your physician to have it checked out. While it may be a simple case of muscle spasms, it also could be an indication of more serious problem.
If your pain is cause by repetitive motion, for example cradling the phone between your shoulder and neck for extended periods of time, perhaps carrying a heavy backpack over the same shoulder or any activity that you do repetitively to one side. Try changing your habits and involving the other side of your body. This can lead to some long term pain relief as you are not overusing those muscle groups.
For those who are suffering from burning neck pain caused by a twinge in the muscle groups in the upper spine and neck area, you can start with over the counter medications, including aspirin for pain relief. Aspirin is an effective pain reliever, though if you have other over the counter medication that you are comfortable with, then go ahead and use those. The idea however is to rest the affected muscles that are causing the burning neck pain, so a combination of medication, rest and ice packs can do the trick.
Resting the neck muscles is important to allow the healing process to quicken, however you do not want to keep your head in the same position for a great length of time as it might stiffen the neck muscles. An ice pack can help reduce the swelling, which is putting the pressure on your nerve endings and causing the pain. You need to be careful not to keep the ice pack on for too long, which might damage your skin in the process.
You’ll want to be careful of treating a bulging disc in your neck. This type of condition is more serious and will not go away just by applying an ice pack or taking over the counter medication. In this case, you will need to see your physician for the proper type of treatment.
