Have you ever seen someone who has strained his neck before? Or, have you ever seen someone who has a plaster or a sort of neck brace fixed round his neck to hold his head and neck in position before? There are many people like this in the hospitals and at private homes, and they wear this brace on their neck because they have strained or hurt their necks one way or the other. Having a neck strain could be very painful and hurting, and it limits many people to their beds or to hospital wards; and when some are even released from the hospitals, they still have to wear this brace for some weeks until the neck strain sufficiently heals up. What is the cause of neck strain, what are the symptoms and how could it be treated?

People strain their necks when they sleep on very hard surfaces like planks and on factory machines. People also strain their necks when they sleep on mats or on benches overnight or over a period of time. You could also strain your neck when you are involved in a road motor accident that inflicted severe injuries to your neck, or when there is a whiplash of an old neck injury returning after many months. It is also possible to have a neck strain when you suffer from a herniated or bulging disc in neck or when there is muscle spasms in the neck. You could also suffer from a neck strain when there is a pinched nerve in your neck region, or when you have neck arthritis or some other forms of osteoarthritis and meningitis among others. Apart from these causes of neck strain, what are the symptoms and how do you treat the condition?

Parts of the symptoms of neck strain are the neck pains associated with the condition, and the neck stiffness that might likely follow. When you have strained your neck, the pains from the neck could be so terrible as to affect the shoulders, the lower back region and the legs. The pains could be dull and prolonged and it could be sharp and intense. Other symptoms of a strained neck are swellings and tenderness in the affected part. You could also experience tingling sensations and numbness or weakness of the limbs when you have strained your neck, and it is possible headaches and feelings of dizziness and lightheadedness. What are the treatments of neck strain?

Massaging the neck with herbal oils and balms, help a great deal; do not forget that a pinched nerve or a stressed muscle might cause your neck strain, and massaging these areas would sure bring a flow of blood and nutrients to ensure quick relief. You can also use ice compress on the neck when it is strained to bring relief, and you are free to use a hot compress if that is what works for you. Meanwhile, you must use medications that are given you by your doctor while also exercising the neck with stretches and strengthening exercises.
