Stiff neck pain is a common affliction amongst people. At some point in time, most people have a stiffness in their neck that is referred by multiple colloquial terms. This may be characterized by pain that starts in the neck and moves down to shoulders or back, or the inability to turn one’s head fully because of stiffness in the neck. Stiff neck pain generally is not serious unless it is the result of an injury. Usually, it is caused by simple things, like sleeping in an improper position, or sitting or standing in a position that strains the muscles in the neck. Other things like sports activities and everyday household chores can cause stiff neck pain. However, there are more serious things that cause stiff neck pain like whiplash, falls from high areas and accidents. How you get stiff neck pain relief greatly depends on whether an injury was sustained or not and the extent of the injury.
As the name suggests, one of the main symptoms of stiff neck pain is stiffness in the neck. This may mean a stiff feeling in the muscles of the neck or difficulty turning one’s head using the neck. Stiff neck pain can also cause pain in the shoulders and back. Sometimes, stiff neck pain can result in headaches as well. How neck pain is treated depends on the symptoms and what makes the pain better or worse. In addition, treatment will vary depending on whether the pain is acute or chronic. Acute pain lasts for a few hours, or a few days. Chronic pain continues for a prolonged period of time.
To determine what method you will use for stiff neck pain relief, closely observe your symptoms and make sure you know the cause of the pain. Many times, the causes is unknown, but most of the time stiff neck pain is caused by bad posture or strain from activity. If this is the case, simple home remedies can be utilized. A good method for self-treating stiff neck pain is to massage the area, being careful not to strain while reaching the neck. Also, the use of heat, such as applying a hot water bottle or standing under a stream of warm water in the shower can provide relief. Utilizing proper posture and using a neck support pillow will reduce the chances for future neck pain and help ease the current neck pain. You can also try simple exercises that can be done at home. Pain medication may be taken to reduce the pain as well.
If those methods for stiff neck pain relief were not successful, then the pain may be chronic and it will be best to seek a doctor. If the pain was caused by whiplash or any other serious injury, see a medical professional as soon as possible. A doctor will recommend the best method for stiff neck pain relief if home remedies do not work. If the injury is particularly serious, you may need to see a physical therapist.
