A stiff neck can be very painful and may often cause difficulty in moving. In order to properly treat this annoying pain with stiff neck remedies, it is very helpful to know some of the causes. Some of the most common causes of developing a stiff neck are sleeping without the proper support from your pillow; walking with a cane that is too long which may cause strain on one side of the neck, and possibly long telephone conversations without the use of a headset. There are many other circumstances that may result in your getting a stiff neck such as stress, injuries from contact sports or exercise, and possibly a car accident causing whiplash in the neck.

Having a stiff neck is no fun and one of the major complaints of experiencing this is trying to turn your head towards the side where it hurts. Sometimes a stiff neck will result in a headache as the nerves and muscles in the neck get irritated which may lead to added pressure and tension. If you are experiencing a headache, one of the stiff neck remedies to relieve you of this is to message yourself to ease some of the tension.

Unfortunately, everyone will experience a stiff neck at some point in their life. However, if you have never experienced this pain or are unaware of the symptoms of a stiff neck, I have listed some common stiff neck symptoms:

  • Difficulty in finding a comfortable position while sleeping. Often you will not get a good night’s sleep.
  • Uncomfortable pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper portion of your back
  • Difficulty in turning your head to the left or right as the neck muscles will be sore
  • Possible muscle spasms
  • Possible fever and headaches

Now that we have a clear understanding of what a stiff neck is and how it can occur, let’s discuss ways to remedy the stiff neck.

Effective Stiff Neck Remedies

As soon as you experience a stiff neck in the morning, it is very important that you act fast to relieve the pain. One solution that works really great is to take a hot shower and let the warm water hit the back of your neck. At this time, you will want to do some light neck exercises to loosen the muscles and nerves in your neck. Slightly move your head forward so that your head is parallel to the floor. Next, move your head back so that your chin is pointing to the ceiling. Finally, you will want to slowly rotate your neck clockwise. If the pain is too excruciating, it is ok to stop. Now try slowly rotating your neck counter-clockwise. Again, if the pain is too severe, you may stop. These gentle neck exercises should help alleviate pain and increase your range of motion.

Applying ice to your neck is another one of many excellent stiff neck remedies. This will help reduce inflammation and the numbing effect will actually minimize the pain as well. Please remember to use a towel or anything else that will provide a good amount of layer between the ice and your neck. This will help prevent discomfort and possible tissue damage.
