Suffering from a stiff neck is not something to be desired, and it could be quite painful and limiting. Although there are stiff neck treatment options available to you if you have this condition, you must first gain understanding of what a stiff neck is and how to go about the treatment. People that have a stiff neck have great difficulty in turning their heads right or left, moving it up and down, or panning it left and right. They are only able to look at anything when they move their whole body, and the action is often awkward and disgracing. In fact, many people that have a stiff neck are not able to drive, wash their clothes, work their garden or do any normal household tasks, and they are not being able to carry out official duties in the office or the factories. What are the causes of stiff neck and what are the stiff neck treatment options available to you?

You can experience a stiff neck when you sleep on a pillow that is too high and firm for you, or when you happen to sleep on a hard surface like a bench, on a mat, or even in a vehicle. You can also suffer from a stiff neck when you drive a very long distance hunched up over the driving wheels, or when you are involved in an accident that causes injury to your neck. It is also possible to suffer from neck stiffness when there is a whiplash from an earlier injury, or when you experience a herniated disc in your neck. You also have a stiff neck when you have a severe episode of muscle spasms and stiff contractions, or when there is a pinched nerve in your neck region. In all these, the major symptoms of a stiff neck are neck pains and neck stiffness among others. What are the stiff neck treatment options to explore then?

There are several ways to treat yourself when you have a stiff neck. You could use a pack of ice or cold compress on the affected part to bring relief to the tensed and stressed muscles. When neck muscles are stressed, it could cause neck pains and stiffness but applying a cold or ice compress relieves the pains by allowing more blood to flow to the muscles and nerves. Alternatively, you can also use a hot compress to supply more blood and nutrients to these muscles and nerves. Meanwhile, using medications would do you a world of good to bring relief and cure; and using herbal ointments and balms on the affected part is a good stiff neck treatment that works. You can also use neck stretches exercises to ease up your neck among other alternative procedures.  When you exercise your neck, you stretch your neck this way and that way or all round, and you also try to pan it this way or that while trying to hold it in position for as long as possible before shifting to other neck exercises that work to bring stiff neck treatment relief.
