Pregnancy can be both a beautiful and confusing time for women. There are many possible causes of neck pain during pregnancy, but among neck pain there are many other symptoms that are completely normal that might be confused for an underlying health issue.

Some of the symptoms women may find themselves having during pregnancy are:

Light abdominal pain and light bleeding

Toothache or gum pain

Possible stomach pain after eating

Heart palpitations

Urine odor

Finger numbness

Racing heart/Sinus tachycardia

Carrying a baby can cause an array of hormonal stress and mental state of change issues along with the obvious physical symptoms. Some women find these symptoms alarming and may seek the comfort of their doctor when they notice the symptoms beginning, but they shouldn’t be alarmed. Neck pain during pregnancy is the most common, but the other symptoms are actually quite common as well.

There are many causes of neck pain during pregnancy but we’re going to discuss the top three reasons for neck pain so you can determine what needs to be done in order to alleviate this pain. Please keep in mind that neck pain during pregnancy is completely normal and a few lifestyle changes during your pregnancy can prevent the majority of the pain.

Changes In Posture

When a woman is not pregnant, your spine curves normally to help support the internal structure of your body and to support movement. When you are pregnant, however, the spine has to adapt and shift to support the new shape and weight of a baby inside of you. When this happens, the muscles in your lower back and abdominal area can be under stress and the muscles in your neck have to work much harder to compensate.

An easy and gentle way to help alleviate some of the neck pain during pregnancy is to do some light and gentle stretching of the neck. Tilt your head back and forth and from side to side.

Exercise Pain

Some women find that some light exercise during pregnancy helps them alleviate some of the other symptoms they may be experiencing. Without proper stretching of the neck muscles due to the changes in posture, this can sometimes cause neck pain. You may pull a muscle in the neck without proper pre-cautionary care for your muscles and your body. As stated earlier, women should be cognizant of their changes in posture. With that in mind, women may do some gentle neck stretching before and after working out or any kind of exercise to help minimize the chance of getting a neck injury.

Lack of Exercise

While exercising might not be the first thing women want to do while pregnant, you might find it beneficial and a great way to help neck pain during pregnancy. Some light yoga or meditation alone can help reduce stress and depression during pregnancy. Women might even benefit from doing some light walking around the block and increasing the amount of distance walked over time. Just remember to do some light stretching for your neck to help reduce the chance of neck pain during pregnancy.
